Connecting to our communities and serving with a purpose

At the Heart of Ultimus for blogIn 2018, just like prior years, Ultimus employees participated in many volunteer service events because giving back to the community is integral to the Ultimus Way. As part of our service culture, we feel it is important to reinvest time and resources to projects, organizations, and causes in our communities by supporting outreach opportunities.

To help fulfill our outreach efforts as we have grown, a dedicated committee was formed in 2015 to offer fun and engaging activities to Ultimus employees, while also providing service opportunities throughout the year. This year, that committee evolved into the CONNECT: Making a Difference group to bring greater scale and more frequent opportunities to our offices in Cincinnati, Columbus and Indianapolis.

This CONNECT group consists of three subcommittees for community, wellness and fun/appreciation and it has led several service opportunities this year to help Ultimus employees connect to our communities and serve with a purpose.

Below are highlights of events a few of our offices have been involved in this year:

Ronald McDonald House Charities

RMHCIn our Cincinnati, Columbus and Indianapolis offices, employees volunteered to organize and contribute nearly 500 snack packs for Ronald McDonald House charities in their respective cities. This initiative allows families to stay close to their hospitalized children by providing meals or snacks without the need to leave their child’s side. Employees contributed various types of snacks, drinks and clear bags and then portioned the materials during afternoon filling sessions. In addition to the packaged snack bags, employees donated additional drinks and money to benefit the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.

James F. Schoenlaub Memorial Golf Outing
Golf OutingFor the 8th year, Ultimus sponsored and participated in the Annual James F. Schoenlaub Memorial Golf Outing benefiting a local high school scholarship fund. Golfers and non-golfers alike divided up into foursomes for a good and entertaining golf scramble. While the weather conditions in July were uncomfortably hot and humid, we had a great turnout, and everyone enjoyed the fun! It is a great pleasure and honor to be able to support this worthwhile event and scholarship fund on an annual basis.

Go the Distance for Cincinnati Children’s
Go the Distance for Cincinnati Children'sA large group of employees and their families participated in the Go the Distance for Cincinnati Children’s 5K/1 Mile at Paul Brown Stadium. In total the event raised over $562,000 for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. All proceeds benefit the life-changing—and life-saving—work at the hospital, one of the oldest and most distinguished in the nation.

Wilmington College Visit to Ultimus’ Columbus Office

The Ultimus Columbus office provided student outreach to help shape the leaders of tomorrow by hosting 27 students from Ohio’s Wilmington College. During the office visit, students received an office tour, industry introduction and a business learning opportunity. Ultimus’ Bryan Ashmus, VP, Director of Financial Administration, led the group with a presentation and discussion tying in components learned in class to real life, along with tips on internships, interviewing, resume writing and business communications - including the useful art of writing emails.

Cincinnati Office Food Drive
Bob Dorsey with La Salle Students‘Called to Serve! and Lancers Roll Deep!’ are LaSalle High School’s mission statement and mantra. They reached out to an alum, Ultimus Co-CEO Bob Dorsey, and requested the support of Ultimus in their “Truck Full of Love” initiative. This outreach program provides non-perishable food items to eight charities in the Greater Cincinnati area. Employees in the Cincinnati office participated and generously donated a variety of food items. We filled multiple boxes in perfect timing for the Thanksgiving holiday season. With Ultimus’ support, the students even surpassed their goal and collected over 52,000 pounds of food!

Holiday Wish Program
Columbus Holiday Wish Program
The Columbus office carried on the tradition of granting holiday wishes and worked with Franklin County Children Services to contribute to their Holiday Wish program. This program allows youth under the care of Franklin County Children Services to request a special toy or gift. In some cases, these are the only gifts the children receive all year. Our associates in the Columbus office generously donated time and resources to provide gifts to numerous children this year by fulfilling specific gift wishes and donating gift cards and unwrapped gifts, helping to brighten the children’s holiday season.

Participating in these service efforts allows Ultimus employees to give back, connect to their local communities, and show compassion and generosity to others. It has enables employees in all departments work together on projects who may not otherwise have the opportunity to interact during their daily job activities.

The CONNECT: Making a Difference committee encompasses 10-15 members representing offices in Cincinnati, Columbus and Indianapolis. Each member stays on the committee for a term of 12 months and then rotates off, allowing other employees at Ultimus the chance to participate.

At the heart of Ultimus, it is our sincere wish to say thank you to our employees and their families who participated in our service-oriented events this past year. We look forward to continuing our community efforts in 2019!
